The Constituent Assembly (CA) has made arrangement for Nepalis living abroad to have their say on the preliminary draft of the new constitution. The Committee on Citizen Relation and Public Opinion Collection has formed a sub-committee to receive suggestions on the draft constitution from the Non-Resident Nepalis (NRN), including students and workers living away from their home. The feedbacks will be collected through embassies, the NRN Associations in various countries and foreign wings of the political parties.
The sub-committee led by Nepali Congress lawmaker Rajib Bikram Shah has already directed all Nepali missions in various countries to hold workshops to receive suggestions. The Nepali missions in Gulf countries have been asked to organise gatherings on July 18 and 19 during Eid.
According to Shah, those living abroad can also post their comments via CA’s website www.can.gov.np/draft or through emails to [email protected] from July 10 to 21. Around three million Nepalis are estimated to be living abroad.
The CA has allocated 15 days starting Thursday to collate public opinion on the preliminary draft of the new statute.
All lawmakers in the CA, except PM Sushil Koirala, CA Chairperson Subas Nembang and Vice-chairperson Onshari Gharti, will have to participate in receiving public opinion. Minimum 240 teams will be mobilised in each constituency to collect suggestions from the public. The inputs from the public will be categorised in three groups and reports will be submitted to CA on July 23.
The suggestions that are similar to the existing draft will be listed in one group, those which are different to those in draft in another while entirely new suggestions will be documented in the third group.
