Senior citizens refuse to leave village despite landslide risk
As the local administration in Dhading is preparing to relocate the people of Jharlang owing to landslide threat, many senior citizens in the village have balked at the idea of leaving.Harihar Singh Rathaur
These days whenever the issue of village relocation arises in a family, it usually ends up in disagreement.
Mencha Tamang refused to move out from the village when his son proposed the idea. The 69-year-old would not be persuaded by his son’s entreaties and cajoleries.
Same was the case with 65-year-old Harka Bahadur Tamang. When his son, Laha, suggested leaving the village and moving to Kathmandu, Harka Bahadur flatly rejected the proposition.
The April 25 quake and its aftershocks have caused several slope failures and surface ruptures in Jharlang, putting the village at high risk of landslides. While the youth population in the village think that relocation is the only option to remain safe, it seems that the older generation is not at all affected by the perils of landslides that face them. Some senior citizens in the village have even claimed that the government is trying to relocate them without even assessing the condition.
