Security upped in Valley
Feedback collection on the preliminary draft of the new constitution formally started amid tight security in the Capital as cadres of the RPP-N and other parties protested in various places.Police were deployed heavily at interaction centres where people were allowed
in only after screening. Around two dozen places were designated for public consultation in the Valley. At least two lawmakers were present at each venue.
Constituent Assembly members from the RRP-Nepal and four regional parties have boycotted the process and are obstructing the feedback collection campaign.
The Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Maoist and the Netra Bikram Chand-led CPN Maoist, which do not have representation in the CA, are also opposed to the process.
Police said protesters attempted to attack Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Local Development and Federal Affairs Prakash Man Singh at Dasharath Stadium. Leaders and supporters of the pro-monarchy, pro-Hindu party demonstrated before Bijaya Smarak School in Dillibazar and Kamal Binayak in Bhaktapur.
Maoist cadres also tried to disrupt the process in Godavari, Lalitpur and
Panga and Lainchaur in Kathmandu. “We foiled the attempts to disrupt the suggestion gathering process,” said SSP Narayan Singh Khadka, spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office.
At least two dozen police officials were deployed to every centre, with security units ready for deployment wherever necessary. SSP Khadka claimed that there was “overwhelming public participation”.
On Tuesday, programmes are scheduled to be held at 22 locations in the three Valley districts to listen to the people’s views on the new constitution.
