Moderate to heavy rains expected in Western hills
Moderate to heavy rains are expected to continue in Western hilly and high-mountainous districts for at least next two to three days, raising concerns of water-inducted disasters. The incessant rains on Wednesday night in different places in Kaski district in Western region caused massive landslides and flooding killing at least 23 people and leaving dozens missing. The meteorological station installed in Pokhara recorded 116 millimeters of rains in 24-hours duration at 8:45 am on Thursday.
The sudden change in local weather system since Wednesday evening that brought heavy rains was due to the influence of the low-pressure system developed with the presence of moisture brought along the way of Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, causing heavy precipitation.
“The rainfall activity is expected to pick up from Friday in many Western and Far-Western districts along with some parts of the Eastern Tarai. The rainfall is likely to be influenced by the cyclonic storm Komen expected to make rainfall over West Bengal, India on Friday,” said Subash Rimal, meteorologist at the Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD).
Usually, the four-month long monsoon that starts from the second week of June and lasts until third week of September unleashes series of flash floods and landslides across the country, killing more than 300 people on average annually. This year’s monsoon has been weak so far with many Tarai districts especially East Nepal witnessing dry weather with inadequate rains so far.
