Landslides threaten relocation site of quake displaced
The earthquake displaced families who were relocated to Lapsibot in Gumda VDC of Gorkha district have said that the area is not safe as there are frequent landslides.Sudip Kaini
One hundred and eighty families are living in temporary shelters at Lapsibot, previously identified as safe location by the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC).
Suman Gurung, one of the displaced, said that the April 25 earthquake had created several cracks on the land, and the monsoon rains caused them to break apart, triggering landslides. “When it rains several landslides occur at a time. We don’t feel safe here,” Gurung said.
Gumda VDC Secretary Hari Bahadur Bhujel said the earthquake displaced families are desperate to leave the area because of landslide threats.
The DDMC is planning to relocate the quake displaced families to Yamgaun. But Bhujel said even Yamgaun is not safe. A committee has been formed under the coordination of Shyam Kishwor Singh, the chief at the Division Office of Urban Development and Building Construction, to find a suitable location to shift the earthquake displaced families who now face landslide danger.
Meanwhile, the tracks connecting some of the worst quake-affected VDCs in the district, including Laprak, Gumda, Lapu, Kerauja, Kashigaun and Uhiya, have been disrupted by heavy rainfall. As a result, shortage of food and other daily essentials have surfaced in these VDCs.
