Aug 21, 2015-
Eighty-five families have been displaced due to Bakraha floods Madumalla VDC-4 and 5 in the district. The river entered the area breaching a temporary embankment at Kaseni on Wednesday night and inundated houses. The temporary dyke was built after the river damaged the embankment and inundated 200 houses in the same area in June.
Police Inspector Shreeram Bhandari of Area Police Post in Urlabari said the floods inundated 85 houses and the displaced are taking shelters in their relatives’ houses and schools.
The river is now flowing through paddy field. Chief District Officer Ganeshraj Karki said they are unable to control the river due to incessant rainfall. He said water level in the river has increased and that security personnel and technicians are deployed in the affected areas.
The river has posed similar threats to villages including Govidapur, Maldaiya, Babiya Birta, Belbari, and Koshi Haraicha.
Locals said the problem was created due to the carelessness in constructing the embankment.
Meanwhile, Water Induced Disaster Prevention Office chief Bhilananda Yadav said insufficient budget allocation had made their efforts to control the river ineffective. Officials said they need Rs 400 million to control the river.
