Here are 5 times Nepalis stood undivided

We haven’t been taught that Nepal has “Unity in diversity” for nothing. It was one of the first things I learned at school. The recent turn of events led me to think of the times when Nepalis were an epitome of unity.
Here are the five times we stood together with each other:
1. The Great Earthquake
Remember the D-day? Do you have memories of how we were uncertain of what we were going to eat and where we would spend the night at? And remember how our neighbours came to our rescue? We borrowed water, food and tarps from our neighbours. People left their homes and set up tents with one another. Everybody slept through the terrifying time consoling one another. The youths left their homes to volunteer at the most affected areas. Nobody really thought of each other’s castes and ethnicity during relief work.
2. That one time when thirty-five thousand Nepalis came together to create a human flag. We broke a record!
Exactly a year ago, more than 35,000 Nepalis teamed up in Tundikhel to set up a human flag. Nepal busted Pakistan’s record. Aren’t we all proud of Nepal’s national flag, the world’s only non-quadrilateral flag?
3. When Bimal Gharti Magar scores a goal or when Paras Khadka leads the team to victory, celebrations erupt nationwide.
Every cricket and football match is a show of national unity, as Nepalis gather to cheer for our heroes. When the team wins, the whole country- as one- celebrates.
4. When we all promoted Nepal Tourism Year 2011
Remember Nepal Tourism Year 2011? Did you know that political parties had signed an agreement to not carry out any strikes for a whole year! The entire country came together to promote tourism- of which cultural diversity is a major part- and the number of tourists almost doubled that year!
5. When we voted like crazy for our CNN Heroes, Anuradha Koirala and Pushpa Basnet
When Anuradha Koirala and Pushpa Basnet were nominated for CNN heroes, we left no stone unturned in voting for their victory. Day and night, appeals for voting were made by Nepalis from all over the world. And when they were declared as winners, weren’t we as proud as peacocks?
