A team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday started taking stock of security situation of banda-hit Gaur of Rautahat and investigated the murder of a local resident in police firing during an agitation by the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM).

As part of the purpose, the team including Subarna Karmacharya, acting chief of the Regional Office of the NHRC in Janakpur, launched a field visit, inquired about security situation of agitation-hit Gaur and looked into the incident, in which an protester Raj Kishor Thakur was shot dead recently during the agitation, it is said.

According to human rights activist Bipin Gautam, the team also met Chief District Officer, security personnel, cadres and leaders of banda organisers and kin of the deceased.

Besides, he said the team also met office bearers of district branch of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists and civil society leaders and held discussions on the latest updates of the security situation of the area.

Buddhi Raj Sahani, member of monitoring committee of the NHRC, said that they are looking into the killing and other security situation of the banda-hit area after investigating the incident site and inquiring police, hospital and civil society about the matter.

Meanwhile, the agitators have demanded that the five-point agreement to be addressed include declaring the deceased a martyr and providing compensation to the family of the deceased among others.

Also, the banda continued to cripple normal life in the district as the agitation entered 14th day today. The markets, educational institutions and industries remained shut while transportation halted.
