Domestic violence tops the chart of violence against women with husbands as main perpetrators, according to a report.Domestic violence tops the chart of violence against women with husbands as main perpetrators, according to a report.
Out of the 270 cases of VAW recorded by Women Rehabilitation Centre (Worec) last month, 145 of them were cases of domestic violence with husbands the main perpetrators.
As per the report, 58 percent of the total alleged perpetrators are husbands and another 15 percent of abuse comes from other family members.
According to women rights activist Reenu Rajbhandari, the data clearly delineates that women are not safe under their own roof. “Women and girls are subjected to violence in our society continuously and this threatens their physical, emotional, psychological and sexual well being,” said Rajbhandari, adding that until this comes to the
attention of concerned authorities and appropriate actions and policies are made, women cannot live freely in society and enjoy their rights.
Beating and sexual abuse come second and third in the list respectively with women from different parts of the country filing 47 complaints against severe beating and 22 rape cases and further 20 cases for being sexually abused.
Trafficking, murder and social violence were other kinds of complains made by women.
Analysing VAW cases on the basis of types of violence further showed five cases of murder, eight cases of trafficking and 19 have been subjected to social violence.
A geographic breakdown of VAW last month showed Central Development Region at top with 119 cases filed in the region. Eastern Development Region with 100 cases was second followed by Western Region with 15 cases, Mid-western Development Region with 18 cases and Far-Western Region with 18 cases.
