Life hit hard in Tarai as strike enters 20th day; Rajbiraj completely shut
There was no respite for the people living across the Tarai region on Thursday as the indefinite general strike enforced by Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) entered the 20th day. Meanwhile, the protesters have vandalised around a hundred vehicles being escorted by the security personnel at Bhardaha - Koshi Barrage stretch from East to West. A vehicle named Mahalaxmi Delux was badly damaged and the driver and the passengers onboard the bus were injured.
The protesters hiding on the side of East-West Highway hurled stones and bottles at the vehicles being escorted by the security personnel in the middle of the night, police said.
The demonstrators smashed the windowpanes of around one hundred buses and left scores of passengers injured. The highway that was cleared by the security personnel for escorting the stranded vehicles in the night was blocked at various places in the morning.
Various marketplaces of Saptari district including the district headquarters, Raj Biraj, Hanuman Nagar, Rupani, Bhardaha, Kanchanpur, and Kalyanpur have been completely shut.
People are facing a shortage of daily essentials as the prices have shot up and the black market has thrived.
