The former National Sports Council member secretary and NOC Secretary General of the past two terms, Shrestha beat rival Umesh Lal Shrestha 17-9 for four-year term. Elections were held for the post of president, Secretary General, Joint Secretary General and nine members. Four vice-presidents—Dhirendra Pradhan, Purendra Bikram Lakhe, Jyoti Rana and Rajendra Bantawa—and treasurer Ratan Kumar Tandon were elected unopposed. In all, 26 member associations had the voting rights.
Nepal Basketball Association President Lama Tendi Sherpa beat two other contestants to win the Secretary General post. Sherpa received 17 votes against his closest rival Chhimi Urkyen Gurung, who got eight, and Deep Raj Gurung. Nepal Boxing Association President Rajiv Shrestha was elected as Joint Secretary General through a luck draw after being tied at 13 votes each with Chaturananda Vaidya.
Among the members to be elected were Sanjib Tuladhar, Ramesh Kumar Shrestha, Nilendra Raj Shrestha, Tej Bahadur Gurung, Deepak Harsha Bajracharya, Sunil Kumar Shrestha, Ashok Bajracharya, Samim Miya Ansari and Ang Dendi Sherpa. Of the 11 contestants Binod Prajapati and Dan Bahadur Tamang were voted out. The elections were held under OCA/IOC observer Vahid Kardany and mediapersons.
The new President Shrestha said he would work to resolve the long standing dispute in the NOC. “While we are already on the road to get
rid of ‘so called duel existence’ of NOC, we will categorically address other issues like the duel existence of associations so that no confusions arise in future,” said Shrestha. Shrestha also said the election was a big slap to certain individuals who are against the development of Nepali sports.
Outgoing President Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan lauded the democratic practice in the NOC. “Congratulations
to those who have been elected. But I also believe those defeated also have responsibility to carry on with their job. Since you are a very experienced individual, I hope the
new committee would draft you in the NOC family in some capacities.”
