Public, political leaders hail the commencement
Sep 21, 2015-
Hundreds of people gathered outside the Constituent Assembly hall at New Baneshwor to celebrate the promulgation of the much awaited constitution on Sunday.National flags were swaying on the hands of many revellers as they sang songs and exchanged greetings with one another. Many young people had the national flag painted on their faces.
As President Ram Baran Yadav proclaimed the new constitution from the CA Hall, the euphoric crowd cheered and applauded outside. Fireworks followed soon after.
The new constitution was adopted, concluding the peace process and giving a new political course to the country.
“We have finally got what we were waiting for years. The country has entered a new era,” said 35-year-old Bishnu Belbase, who was celebrating the historic day at Naya Baneshwor.
The political leaders, who had long been criticised for their failure to agree on a new constitution, were equally jubilant.
“The people have got the most progressive constitution in the history of Nepal,” said UCPN (Maoist) leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha. “The challenges now remain in its implementation.”
Former Prime Minister and senior CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal said that the constitution has addressed most of the concerns of the country’s diverse population. He regretted that despite numerous efforts, the parties failed to bring the Madhes-based parties in the CA to be the part of the constitution promulgation event.
Nepali Congress Vice-president Ram Changra Poudyal said the constitution was not a definitive document and it could always be amended.
