Dr KC death fast fails to draw govt’s attention
Sep 22, 2015- The government has shown no sign of addressing the demands of Dr Govinda KC, who is staging his seventh fast onto death protest demanding reforms in the country’s medical education and profession.
Shanta Raj Subedi, secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, said the demands of Dr KC require political solution and the entire focus of the government right now is on constitution.
“We have not discussed on the matter of Dr KC. As far as I understand, all of his demands have been addressed by the social committee of the Cabinet,” said Subedi.
Education Minister Chitra Lekha Yadav said they have not held any meetings on Dr KC’s demands. “Everyone is busy with the constitution,” she said.
One of the chief demands of Dr KC is formation of an apex regulatory body for medical education chaired by prime minister, as suggested by the report on Health Profession Education Policy drafted by a panel led by Kedar Bhakta Mathema.
Going against the recommendation of the Mathema report to appoint prime minister as the chairperson of the Health Profession Education Commission, the government had recently decided to appoint education minister to the post.
Dr KC has objected to this decision.
