The general public welcomed the new constitution by organising rallies and mass assemblies in several districts on Monday. Nepal for the first time has a constitution written by elected representatives.

Celebrations witnessed an overwhelming participation of locals, political activists and the business community among others.

In Chitwan, locals took out a cultural rally to express their satisfaction following the unveiling of the new statute. Locals also illuminated the marketplace, road junctures and their homes with candles.

Butwal folks cherished the occasion by organising a rally in Rupandehi and an assembly in Media Chok, followed by Deepawali-style celebrations during the evening.

Simara likewise welcomed the new constitution with a mass rally. Locals of Dumarwana, Amalekhgunj and Pathalaiya, including other areas, also expressed their jubilation.

Our correspondent from Argakhanchi said people celebrated into the wee hours with several cultural programmes on Sunday.

In Gorkha, where a majority of the people have been displaced by the April 25 earthquake, people hailed the fulfilment of their decades-long dream of writing a constitution through elected representatives.

Chanda Kumari KC of Khalanga-2 in Jajarkot, who’s son Jayandra was killed 12 years ago in Myagdi during the civil war, said her sorrows have been partially healed with the promulgation of a new constitution.

Rukum folks hoped that the new statute would bring everlasting peace and prosperity in the country. Dipendra Saha of Bankatawa-4 in Banke, who lost both his brothers during the civil war, hoped that the foundation for development has now been laid.

Family members of those lost in the decade-long civil war also took great pleasure in the unveiling of the new constitution.

Likewise, Dharan, Udayapur, Dhankuta, Okhaldhunga, Sankhuwasabha and Panchthar folks organised several welcome programmes as part of their celebrations.

Senior journalist Chandra Bhandari of Jhapa said the dream of Nepali people to draft a constitution on their own has finally materialised.

Baburam Karki of Taregana in Siraha hoped for a stable and developed Nepal, and Mina Acharya of Sindhuli believed that this is a milestone on their quest for change.

Similarly, people of Kaski, Palpa, Myagdi, Lamjung, Syanja, Tanahun and Gulmi also took out rallies, organised mass assemblies and followed them with Deepawali-style celebrations on Sunday and Monday.

The situation was no different in the Far West. Elated Bajura locals, however, urged the government to hold local elections as soon as possible.
