During a meeting at the PM’s official residence in Baluwatar, Dr KC had reminded the PM of the 11-point agreement reached with him where had been agreed to form a Health Profession Education Commission chaired by the prime minister himself and stop affiliation of medical colleges until a new human resource policy is formulated. “We could not implement the agreement because of the present crisis and ongoing discussion over a new government,” said Dr KC quoting PM Koirala.
Dr KC said he urged PM Koirala to play a proactive role in implementing the decisions that will apparently help in building a better healthcare system and medical education.
Dr KC had earlier staged fast-unto-deaths for seven times demanding reforms in medical education and to end political meddling in education institutions. The 11-point agreement that Dr KC has been referring to includes formation of an overarching body that would regulate medical education and also help in imparting quality education. Some of the issues including setting a ceiling in fee and promoting government medical colleges have been already addressed.
The government had recently formed the Commission, but was immediately rendered dysfunctional since the education minister was appointed chairperson of the commission and Dr JP Agrawal the vice-chairperson. According to Dr KC, political sharing in the Commission will eventually pull down the entire progress made in the sector.
