Earthquake-displaced get job demolishing buildings

Some earthquake-displaced people in Dhading have been hired by the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) to demolish the quake-damaged government buildings at the district headquarters.

Tokman Tamang, chairman of Alchhidanda Camp Management Committee, said a person makes up to Rs 730 a day in the job. “Even women gets paid the same amount,” he said. Chiniamaya Tamang, an earthquake displaced victim from Ree VDC-9, said she was glad to have a well-paying job as her family had lost everything in the April earthquake.

“I was worried how my family was going to celebrate Dashain this year. But now I’ve a job which means my family can celebrate Dashain without having to worry about finances,” she beamed.

She has already started to  save for the festival.

Dhan Bahadur Tamang of Tipling village has been assigned by the DDMC to demolish the building which used to be the District Police Office. “I was fortunate to get this job. It means a lot to me and my family,” he said.

The DDMC has hired 20 people from 12 camps for the earthquake-displaced to demolish the damaged infrastructure at the district headquarters.

Chief District Officer Basudev Ghimire said they plan to demolish all the damaged buildings before Tihar. Ninety-seven government office buildings, including that of District Administration Office, District Development Committee, District Post Office and District Land Revenue Office, were damaged by the earthquake.
