CPN (UML) leader and former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has clarified that there will be no compromise on the issues of patriotism and nationality.

Speaking in an interaction programme on "Nepal's Constitution and its Implementation Challenges" organised by the Ex-Members of Parliament Club in the Capital on Thursday, leader Nepal stressed on the unity among the major political parties at least up to the next election to face the challenges seen after the promulgation of the new constitution.

He stressed on the unity among all on the issues of nationality, independence and integrity. Former Prime Minister Nepal said that the government should go forward in a balanced way with the consideration of peoples' interest and welfare of the nation.

He added that India should not dictate Nepal citing do this and do not do that. "The model of the constitution and federal units were totally our issues and we want to maintain friendship with neighbours," leader Nepal said.

He added that the bilateral relations had magically harmonised last year with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Nepal visit, but it got frosty within a short time frame. He pointed out the need of developing the culture of respecting the sovereignty of neighbouring countries as all should respect the method, process and principle of democracy.

The situation worsened due to the unnecessary loyalty of our leaders towards foreign powers, he said.

UML leader Nepal said that Nepal has made a new history after the promulgation of a new constitution though there were a lot of hindrances for the same.

The constitution was promulgated with over two-thirds majority, however, if there were any dissatisfaction on it that should be taken seriously.

There were some misunderstandings about the constitution due to vested illusion and these should be corrected by all, leader Nepal said.

Minister for Law, Justice, Constituent Assembly and Parliamentary Affairs, Narahari Acharya said that those issues not mentioned in the newly promulgated constitution could be made accommodative with its amendment.

"Amendment will make the constitution strong, instead of weakening it. So the democratic constitution could be effective ahead," he said.

Former Speaker Taranath Ranabhat, also chairman of the Club, said that efforts should be taken towards making the country independent, while preserving nationality, after removing disputed provisions from the constitution through its amendment.

And the issue of amending the constitution should be taken up in the first meeting of the federal parliament, which is a first means for that end, he said.

Likewise, Chitra Bahadur KC, Chairman of the Rastriya Janamorcha, said that problems that may surface in the course of the implementation of the newly drafted constitution, should be resolved together.

Senior political expert Ramhari Joshi, also chairman of the Club, said that demands of the agitating groups in the Tarai should be taken seriously.

Joshi was also honoured with the 'Loktantrik Award' carrying a purse of Rs 50,000, at the event.

Similarly, Dipendra Mishra, central member of the Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party, which also joins the agitations in the Tarai, said that the trend of undermining a Nepali by another one should be stopped.
