Good governance, equity sharing key to forest management: Report

A report on good governance, inclusiveness and social justice prepared by a task force under the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation (MOFSC) formed to ensure effective implementation of the newly formulated Forest Policy 2014 states that sustainable forest management is possible only through enhancement of good governance and ensuring equity sharing of the benefits of the forest resources among the communities dependent on forests. The ministry has already formed seven thematic task forces comprising government officials and experts to closely look over the implementation of each thematic sectors. The Forest Policy 2014 envisions achieving economic and environment development through proper forest management tools. The policy further states dedicating 40 percent of the country’s land to forests and promoting sustainable forest management approaches.
One of the biggest challenges in forest management in Nepal is lack of approach that includes consumer’s perspective in production, manufacturing and use of forest products through effective forest management, according to the report. The government efforts so far have failed to keep a balance between forest conservation and sustainable development.
