The government is preparing to amend the newly adopted constitution in order to incorporate the “genuine” and “logical” demands of the agitating parties in response to the prolonged unrest in the Tarai.

It has mandated the government talks team to intensify dialogue with the Madhes-based parties and arrive at an agreement to end the political impasse without further delay.

A meeting of the High-level Political Committee held at Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s residence in Baluwatar on Thursday mandated the government team to address the preconditions put forth by the agitators. Leaders attending the meeting also agreed to end the impasse by committing to changes in the federal structure based on the recommendations of a Federal Commission later.

“The constitution will be amended soon after the government team and the Madhes-based parties sign a deal,” said PM’s Press Adviser Pramod Dahal. In Thursday’s meeting, Oli urged the agitating parties to call off their protest at border points and allow the movement of fuel and other daily essentials. “We are open to discussion for revising the state borders,” the PM told the meeting.

Oli stressed the need to end the ongoing crisis immediately and to resolve the country’s internal issues through talks.

Leaders said implementation of the Cabinet decision to provide compensation to family members of the deceased and injured protesters would begin soon. The new government is said to be preparing to table an amendment bill in Parliament once two sides ink a formal agreement. The Sushil Koirala-led government also tabled an amendment proposal in the House to amend the constitution in order to address two of the demands of the protesters.

The Koirala government had decided to provide Rs1 million to family members of each deceased and to bear medical expenses of the injured protesters.
