Police, betel nut smugglers clash in jhapa

Betel nut smugglers clashed with police at Kechana, a Nepal-India border point in southern Jhapa on Friday morning.
Police fired dozens of bullets into the air to bring the situation under control. During firing, 55-year-old Daupati Ganesh of Kechana-5 sustained shrapnel injuries, police said, adding that she is undergoing treatment at Bhadrapur-based Pathibhara Hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place when smugglers tried to cross the border into India carrying illegal betel nuts. Police seized 40 sacks of betel nuts from Indian smugglers. Chief District Officer Tej Prasad Paudel said security personnel were compelled to open fire to bring the situation under control.
