General Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) Sitaram Yechury has said the “undeclared” blockade on Nepal is India’s great mistake in its diplomacy. He claimed that the blockade had tarnished India’s ‘image’ in the world.
Talking to the Post in New Delhi on Saturday, Yechury said the Indian government had no answer why it imposed the blockade and why there is no supply of essentials through the customs points that did not have any protests and obstructions.
About a dozen Indian lawmakers, including Yechury, raised questions over the blockade to Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj during last week’s ‘Nepal-special’ meeting in Lok Sabha. They suggested that the Indian government help resolve the humanitarian crisis in Nepal caused by the blockade.
“During the meeting we asked the foreign minister why the essential goods were not supplied even through the border points without protests. But there was no clear reply,” Yechury said. I will consult with the prime minister and answer the parliament later on the question related to the failure to reroute cargo trucks stuck in Raxaul customs, Yechury quoted Swaraj as saying.
