Most of the prominent politicians, civil servants and civil society members summoned by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) have sought an additional 15 days to furnish their property details to the anti-graft body.

The anti-graft body had asked the people accused of accumulating wealth beyond their known legitimate source of income to submit property details by January 9. Almost all the political figures have, however, requested for more time claiming that listing the property details in a CIAA form was complex and would take longer than the 15-day deadline to complete it.

“All of us from UML have asked for a 15-day extension as the property detail form is complex and time consuming to fill out. It seeks sources of each property,” said UML leader Janardan Dhakal, one of the politicians facing charges of accumulating the property through illegal means.

Sajha Yatayat Chairman and civil society leader Kanak Mani Dixit, also facing a CIAA investigation, has filed a writ at the Supreme Court challenging the commission’s move to summon him, accusing it of breaching the legal procedures and without mentioning particular charges.

The apex court, in response to the writ, has asked the CIAA to appear before the court with the decision to summon Dixit, complaints and files concerning his involvement in amassing property disproportionate to his legal means. The next hearing on the writ is scheduled for January 5.

Dixit, who has already collected 13-pages for property details collection, has yet to furnish the details. His lawyers said Dixit would furnish the details only after the court issues interim order on the issue.

In the first week of December, the CIAA had summoned 29 influential people on suspicion of accumulating properties beyond their known legal sources of income and asked the central bank to freeze their lockers.

Six ministers of the erstwhile Khilraj Regmi-led government—Vidhyadhar Mallik, Ram Kumar Shrestha, Chhabiraj Panta, Shankar Koirala, Umakant Jha and Tek Bahadur Gharti—are among the individuals under the CIAA scanner.

Maoist lawmakers Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Lhyarkyal Lama, UML leaders Banshidhar Mishra, Rajendra Pandey, Surendra Pandey, Bijay Poudel, Janardan Dhakal and Ichchharaj Tamang, were also summoned for inquiry.
