Nepal, who were already in the quarter-finals of the tournament as Group ‘D’ runners-up, were yet to be confirmed about their opponents. Bangladesh on Tuesday hammered Namibia by eight wickets to win Group ‘A’ and set an all-South Asian clash in the last eight. Namibia, surprise two-wicket winners over defending champions South Africa in league stage, will meet Group ‘D’ winners India on February 6.
Bangladesh have already posed themselves as title contenders defeating South Africa convincingly by 43 runs in their tournament before routing Scotland by 114 runs in the second game. On Tuesday, they skittled out Namibia for a tournament-low 65 in 32.5 overs before reaching the total in 16 overs for the loss of two wickets.
Nepal had begun their tournament on a high-note with a stunning 32-run win over Test giants New Zealand before an eight-wicket victory over fellow Associates Ireland confirmed their spot in the quarters. They were, however, given a reality check on Monday after India crushed them by seven wickets who had cantered to victory in just 18.1 overs in chase of 170 runs.
In the only match between the two teams in the U-19 World Cups, Nepal had stunned Bangladesh by 23 runs 2002 Plate semi-finals in New Zealand before they went on to lose to another Test side Zimbabwe in the final.
In another match on Tuesday, West Indies pipped Zimbabwe by two runs to seal the last eight spot from Group ‘C’. England had qualified from the group as winners. From Group ‘B’, Asian Test heavyweights Pakistan and Sri Lanka made it through. New Zealand and South Africa were the two big teams eliminated from the league stage.
