Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel, who is in the Indian Capital to primarily prepare for Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s upcoming India visit, met Indian Minister for External Affairs (MEA) Sushma Swaraj on Sunday evening.
During the meeting described as “moving forward” of the stalled bilateral engagements, the two ministers discussed Nepal’s political situation and Prime Minister Oli’s visit to India scheduled to start on February 19. The meeting also discussed the remaining constitutional issues and post-disaster reconstruction in Nepal, MEA Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said in a tweet after the meeting. “Moving forward our engagement with Nepal,” Swarup tweeted.
“Minister Poudel is busy holding talks to rebuild trust between the two countries after months of strained ties,” said an official who attended the meeting.
Poudel, who landed in New Delhi on Sunday morning, met Home Minister Rajnath Singh. In the meeting, Poudel was accompanied by Finance Secretary Lok Darshan Regmi, Foreign Secretary Shankar Das Bairagi, and deputy chief of the Nepali Embassy in Delhi Krishna Prasad Dhakal.
“The finance minister’s discussions with Indian officials will be focussed on the line of credit being extended to Nepal by India, regular assistance and post-earthquake reconstruction projects,” said Dhundi Raj Pokharel, minister-economic at the Nepali Embassy.
Concrete details on the Indian assistance to Nepal will be finalised after Minister Poudel’s meeting with his Indian counterpart Arun Jaitley. He is scheduled to have a luncheon meeting with Jaitley on Monday.
