His nephews Atul Koirala and Sudanshu jointly lit the funeral pyre according to Hindu tradition. Large number of people from all walks of life turned up at Aryaghat to witness Koirala's funeral rites.
Earlier in the day, his body was moved in a funeral procession from Dashrath Stadium, where his body was kept for dignitaries and commoners to pay their last respects.
The body procession moved through Ram Shah Path, Kamalpokhari, Gyaneshwor, Ratopul, and Gaushala before finally reaching Pashupati Aryaghat.
Koirala, 78, died in the wee hours of Tuesday morning at his residence in Maharajgunj. He was 78.
He had undergone radiotherapy for lung cancer in 2014 and surgery for tongue cancer 10 years ago in the US.
Koirala, who became the 37th prime minister in 2014 after the second Constituent Assembly (CA) elections, promulgated the new constitution that formally ended the long-drawn peace process.
