Issuing a press statement on Friday, the SLMM, an alliance of seven Madhes-based parties, said the mechanism was formed unilaterally when efforts to seek consensus were on through talks. “The mechanism cannot address our demands,” said the SLMM in the statement. “So we reject the mechanism.”
The government on Thursday night, a day before Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s visit to India, had formed the mechanism, which is said to have 11 members, including leaders from the agitating parties. The SLMM said on Friday that the mechanism was formed as “part of a design to foil protests launched by minorities and backward communities, including Madhesis” and to appease “foreigners”.
