If everything works out according to a plan, three of the Capital’s busiest thoroughfares—New Road, Old Buspark and Bagbazaar—will be linked to country’s biggest underground parking and largest subway by next year.
At present, Kathmandu has only one subway at Ratna Park. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) said the feasibility study had been going on for the past one month.
“This will significantly reduce the traffic jams and overwhelming crowds on the pavement in the area,” said Shiva Raj Adhikari, a KMC official, explaining that the project will be carried out in a Public-Private Partnership model.
A separate subway will be made on the south-east side of the Khullamanch towards Old Buspark. The same parking slot will then be connected to Bagbazaar to the north-east and New Road to the south-west. “People can park their vehicles underground at Khulamanch and head to any of the three locations on foot through the subways in less time without any trouble,” said Adhikari.
The proposed underground parking, officials say, will be of two-storeyed building spreading over 48 ropanis of land and will have an adequate parking space for hundreds of vehicles.
The sidewalks on either side of the subway will be rented out for business purpose. Nest Private Limited has been conducting a research for the project in cooperating with the KMC.
