The mela is a monthly event held on the last Saturday of every month.
“These monthly melas are like a cultural fest. We have tried to include as many variations in our stalls as possible so visitors can have a good time. We have three different kinds of stalls: one focuses on promoting Nepali products, one on different Nepali foods, and the last one is our second-hand garage sale,” says Saroj Maharjan, Founder/ Director of Bikalpa Art Centre. “Our aim is to give a space for people to just enjoy their Saturday amid a cultural surrounding. In total there are 13 stalls today, although we have tried to limit our number of stalls to 10 exclusive stalls,” he adds.
In addition to the stalls of jewellery, handicrafts, woolen products, the mela also had an open mic session, an exhibition by Ujyalo Foundation, face painting, live portrait drawing, art and craft workshop, and musical performances during the day. Also part of the mela was a kiosk by Powerful Hands, a non-profit social event management organisation, where hand-made products by women victims of the earthquakes of last year in Sindhupalchowk were on display. The event was followed by a session with DJ Freakmode Schlabadduerst Records and Sacred Circuits and an after party.
