Draft Act ready to regulate medical schools

The Act will also set legal grounds for implementing Health Profession Education Policy that bars establishing new medical colleges in Kathmandu Valley for a decade and decentralise the medical schools.
“Now the draft will go for wider consultation among experts and government officials before it is sent to Parliament for endorsement,” said Dr Bhagwan Koirala, vice chairman of the commission. He said the Act will ensure that all the academic activities related to health education will be overseen by the commission.
The had formed the commission in January with members including Dr Arjun Karki, former vice chancellor of Patan Academy of Health Sciences; Dr Jagdish Agrawal, medical educationist; Dr Shree Krishna Giri, former rector of National Academy of Medical Sciences; Dr Srijana Shrestha, dean of PAHS and Dr Suresh Kumar Kanodiya, who represents
private medical colleges.
The policy has set a Rs 3.5 million threshold for an MBBS course fee while also stopping issuance of Letter of Intent to new medical schools, for next 10 years.
The commission was formed on the recommendation of Health Profession Education Policy drafted by a committee led by Kedar Bhakta Mathema, former vice chancellor of the TU.
