Gypsy jazz, a colorful genre that emerged from jazz culture and gypsy roots in the 1930s, has an exquisite appeal and complexity and is slowly gaining popularity around the globe. In south-east Asia, and particularly Nepal, this is an exclusive genre which has seen an increase in interest and appreciation through the support and guidance of world-renowned French gypsy jazz guitarist Daniel Givone and musician Hari Maharjan. Both musicians have passionately taken initiatives to promote the music since 2002 with the festival finally taking shape in 2014.
Speaking about the current edition of the festival, Prateek Pradhan, the event manager, said, “The festival is a platform for Western musicians and Nepali musicians and music enthusiasts to learn from each other. Gypsy jazz has been showcased in smaller stages for the past 15 years. I’ve collaborated with international artists at bars in Kathmandu and Pokhara on smaller scale. This year we hope to take it to the next level “ The 2016 festival will feature musicians Daniel Givone, Vincent Millioud, Greg Pittet, Irene Ypenburg, Emmett Mahoney, Hari Maharjan and Patrick Perrier.
The Kathmandu leg of the festival will see performances at Flavours Café, Boudha on Mar 7, Hotel Summit, Kupondole on Mar 11, Alliance Francaise, Teku on Mar 12 with the final jam being hosted by the Attic Bar, Naxal on March 13.
