Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs  Kamal Thapa on Tuesday left for New York to participate at the High-level Signature Ceremony of the Paris Agreement being convened by Secretary-General of the United Nations  Ban Ki-moon on Friday at the UN headquarters in New York. 

The agreement was adopted by the 21st Session of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Paris on December 12, 2015. 

During a 10-day visit, Thapa will sign the agreement on behalf of the government of Nepal and will also make a national statement on the occasion, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. On Thursday, Thapa will participate in the High-level Thematic Debate on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

On the sidelines of these two high-level engagements, DPM Thapa will hold bilateral meetings with top UN officials, including President of the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Mogens Lykketoft. 

He will participate in a talk programme on Consolidation of Peace, Stability and Democracy in Nepal and Nepal-US Partnership for Enhanced Prosperity hosted by the United States Institute of Peace in Washington DC on Monday.

According to the ministry, Thapa will also hold bilateral meetings with Hugo Swire, minister of state at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of UK, and Desmond Swayne, minister of state for International Development in London on his return 

to Kathmandu.
