The almost rotten pointed-gourds was painted lush green and put for sale at the Wholesale Vegetable Market in Nepalgunj. Indian nationals Lakram Sonkar, Kriparam Sonkar and Lakhiram Sonkar were arrested along with the sacks of pointed, according to the District Police Office.
The vegetable unsold in the neighbouring Indian market of Rupadiya is brought to Nepali market for cheap and sold after adding artificial colouring to it, it has been revealed.
The wholesale vegetable market draws a significant number of customers along with retailers to buy fresh vegetables. Consumption of vegetables laced with such inedible colours could lead to diseases like cancer and kidney ailments, warns Chief of the Regional Food Technology and Quality Control Office, Bimal Dahal.
