Settlements in Beni-Lete stretch at landslide risk

Diwakar Poudel of the office said the settlements are perched in precarious setting where landslides could occur any time. Besides landslide threat, these areas also face flooding risk from the Kali Gandaki, Myagdi and Rahughat rivers.
Incidents of landslides are reported every monsoon in places like Chaurkhani, Chipleti, Okharbot, Bandrakhalti, Rayokhor, Beshi, Torakhet, Khashrupani and Gyangrikhola. Kapre, Rupsechhahara, Titar, Ghattehola, Phagam and Gadpar villages are also vulnerable.
Local Development Officer Chiranjibi Paudel said series of landslides have occurred in the region, also known as Kali Gandaki Corridor, after the motor road was constructed.
In May 2015, a local river was blocked at Baisari after a massive landslide at Mahavir in Ramche VDC-9 along the Beni-Jomsom road.
The river was blocked for 16 hours. The same river was obstructed by a landslide
for 10 hours at Goganpani in Andhagalchhi area in 1998 as well.
