One of the five rhinos translocated to the Bardia National Park (BNP) two months ago has given birth to a healthy calf on Sunday, indicating that translocated species are capable of adapting to new habitats.
The rhino with ID 21010 translocated from Chitwan National Park (CNP) to Babai Valley inside BNP in March this year gave birth to a male calf in Guthi post area inside the park, said Ashok Bhandari, assistant chief warden of BNP on Wednesday.
Nepal started rhino translocation in 1986 when 13 of these endangered species were translocated from CNP to BNP. A total of 87 rhinos were translocated to BNP and Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve by 2003, where over 70 rhinos were translocated in Babai Valley.
Nepal is home to 645 one-horned rhinos, with CNP having the highest 605 rhinos followed by BNP 29.
