Parties affiliated to the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha, which had enforced a five-month long obstruction at Nepal-India border points, have been protesting peacefully in Kathmandu.
Senior Madhesi leaders said the government’s apathy for resuming the talks have forced them to rethink their protest strategy. They have accused the government of ignoring their peaceful protests. Laxman Lal Karna, co-chair of the Sadbhawana Party, said they would take a concrete decision to return to their constituencies if there is no response from the government in the next 15 days.
“The main purpose of the Capital-centric protest was to create pressure on the government to address our demands through peaceful demonstration. What’s the use of continuing with the protests if the government is not pressed?” asked Karna. The agitating Madhesi parties and the government have long been trading barbs, accusing each other of causing delay in resuming talks. The two sides have not held talks since February.
