Gathabandhan asks for package deal
Madhesi and Janajati parties affiliated to the Sanghiya Gathabandhan have decided to help the Nepali Congress and the CPN (Maoist Centre) topple the KP Sharma Oli-led governmentMadhesi and Janajati parties affiliated to the Sanghiya Gathabandhan have decided to help the Nepali Congress and the CPN (Maoist Centre) topple the KP Sharma Oli-led government but any further assistance would depend on the package the first and third largest parties offer to address their demands.
The Gathabandhan allies held an internal meeting on Sunday to formulate a new strategy. “What’s certain is the Gathabandhan will assist the NC-Maoists in the no-confidence motion,” said Ashok Rai, senior leader of the Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum Nepal.
“But there hasn’t been any decision yet on supporting Dahal in the prime ministerial race or joining the government. We’ll first see their proposal for addressing our demands before taking a further decision,” Rai added.
Sadbhawana Co-chair Laxman Lal Karna said that the Madhes-based parties would not join the government under the present circumstances.
“But we’re open to joining the government if the NC-Maoists agree to amend the constitution to address our demands,” Karna said. The Gathabandhan wrapped up its month-long relay hunger strike on Friday.
Among others, the Gathabandhan’s 26-point demand includes revision to the federal boundaries and carving two provinces in the Tarai.
