Senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr KC ended his eighth hunger strike on 16th day after signing a four-point agreement with the government, which includes a government takeover of the Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences (MMIHS). The government has also agreed to include a provision in the Medical Education Bill to make available 50 percent of the total seats free at the government-owned medical universities and establish at least one government medical college in all the federal provinces.
The private medical operators argued the agreement that the government has reached with Dr KC would jeopardise the private medical colleges. The idea of negating the private sector in the medical field was absurd, they said.
College owners, employees and students of medical colleges from across the country, including Nepal Medical College, KIST Medical College, Nepalgunj Medical College participated in the protest rally.
Meanwhile, a group of sportspersons under the banner of Sports Rights Struggle Committee staged a protest in support of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority chief Lok Man Singh Karki. The rally, which began from Dasharath Stadium, converged with the rally led by the private medical college proprietors and converted into a corner meeting at New Baneshwor. They chanted slogan in support of Karki, urging him to move ahead fearlessly.
In a controversial move, the CIAA took charge of the entrance examination of the KU School of Medicine on May 28 suspecting a question paper leak. The commission then brought along experts who picked the questions two days prior to the test and conducted the exam.
Protesting the CIAA move as crossing its jurisdiction, Dr KC had also demanded an impeachment against Karki.
