Around 2,000 families in Sindhupalchok could face food shortage as a result of recent floods that damaged the Araniko Highway.

Transportation of food and other daily essentials has come to a complete halt after the flooded Bhotekoshi river swept away several parts of the highway’s Barhabise-Tatopani stretch. In places like Tatopani, Chaukidanda, Liping, Listi and Phulpingkatti, people are running out of food stocks. 

Dambar Shrestha, of Tatopani Disaster Management Committee, said they have food supplies that could last for a week at most.

Transportation of food and other essentials in the region has not taken place for nearly a month, he added.

People in Chaukidanda have been visiting Barhabise to buy foodstuffs these days.

Local grocers have long run out of food items, said Suresh Ghatali.

The people living in flood-affected areas have urged the District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee to send food supplies immediately.

Chief District Officer Gokarnamani Duwadi, who also chairs the committee, said they were preparing to get foodstuffs and essential medicines to the affected areas. There will not be a food shortage, he assured.
