The Social Justice and Human Rights Committee of Parliament has directed the government to arrange for human resource, funds and necessary laws within 15 days to facilitate the works of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappeared Persons. The Social Justice and Human Rights Committee of Parliament has directed the government to arrange for human resource, funds and necessary laws within 15 days to facilitate the works of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappeared Persons.
The directive follows a meeting of the committee members with TRC Chairman Surya Kiran Gurung and CIEPD Chair Lokendra Mallik on Tuesday. They had apprised the parliamentarians of the difficulties the transitional justice bodies had been facing while working without the requisites.
Gurung said after the meeting that the TRC had urged the government in December last year to amend necessary Acts and laws governing the commissions.
“In every meeting with the committee, we have been demanding legal reforms and resources. We will conclude the process on time if the government provides us with necessary resources,” said Gurung. Both the commissions have five months left to complete their work.
Committee Chairperson Sushil Kumar Shrestha said the ministers concerned would be summoned for clarification if the directive is not heeded on time.
