Students of Janata Primary School in Lahan VDC-4 of Jajarkot district have been studying under the open sky after their classrooms were destroyed by last month’s floods and landslides.
Bal Bahadur Rawal, the school headmaster, said the two school buildings were obliterated when floods and landslides struck the area one after another.
“The land where the school stood has been reduced to a desert. The classroom and office furniture, educational materials, records and documents, everything was lost,” Bal Bahadur said. “We are conducting the classes, but it is very difficult.”
The school is closed if there is a rain or the afternoon heat is unberable. Many students have left the school after the incident.
Til Bahadur Rawal, one of the parents, said his children fear going to school after seeing the devastation caused by floods and landslides to their classrooms.
“They are not scared for nothing. The school area is still vulnerable,” said Til Bahadur.
Headmaster Bal Bahadur said the school does not have enough fund to immediately rebuild the classrooms and other school infrastructure. Properties worth nearly Rs 7 million was destroyed in the disaster. For now, the teachers and the students are making do with the current arrangements.
