Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Bimalendra Nidhi on Sunday met Vice-president of Indian National Congress Rahul Gandhi.
During the meeting at Hotel Taj Palace, Nidhi informed Gandhi about the recent political development in Nepal and decisions taken by the new government.
“I informed him that the top priority of the present government is to amend the constitution to address the aspirations of Madhesi people and go for the election,” Nidhi told the Post.
According to him, Gandhi pledged support from the Indian National Congress in the efforts made by the Nepal government to lead the country towards peace and stability. Gandhi also expressed concerns about the demands of the Madhes-based parties.
Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Dovel also called on DPM Nidhi at the hotel and discussed about the bilateral issues.
DPM Nidhi had earlier held a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday and handed over a letter from Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to his Indian counterpart.
Officials at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs Ministry said that Prime Minister Dahal has conveyed his desire to speed up development works rather than focusing on political and diplomatic matters and that he had sought help from the Indian side.
A major project is expected to be signed between Nepal and India as per the desire of PM Dahal when he embarks on a three-day official to India on September 15.
DPM Nidhi also held discussions with Indian officials regarding a long list of agreements PM Dahal wants to sign during the visit.
According to a source, Prime Minister Dahal, in his letter, has suggested taking ahead the works of long-delayed Pancheshwor multipurpose project on the Mahakali river. Modi had pledged to accord priority to the Pancheshwor project during his visit to Nepal in 2014.
