Launching a book titled Pahichanko Khoji on Saturday, Gharti said that the new constitution envisages a just society, acknowledges equal rights of women. “An amendment to constitution is advisable to address the genuine concerns of the marginalised communities,” she said. “For that, we should implement the new constitution first.”
She admitted low representation of women in public sphere despite a despite a 100-year history of women’s leadership in Nepali politics. Dibya Debi Koirala, Durga Devi Dixit, Melawadevi, Tulashadevi and Yam Maya Koirala had participated in political revolt against Rana oligarchy.
“After 1990, Janajati women become more active in political front,” she said, “The Maoists insurgency saw an unprecedented participation of women, which ultimately brought many issues of women to the fore.”
The book, edited by researcher Kailash Rai, has compiled old and new articles on women issues that appeared between 1960 to 2015, with special focus on Janajati women.
