Flood disrupts traffic on East-West Highway

Hundreds of passengers have been stranded owing to the transport disruption, with no improvement on the situation till the late evening, police said. This has led to long queues of vehicles on either side of the road.
The causeway in the forest at Chandrapur Municiaplity-7 had been flooded since Monday morning due to incessant rains in the catchment area. A passenger bus belonging to Miteri Transportation was stuck in the flood as its engine stalled while crossing the causeway. The security personnel later rescued the passengers.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Nabin Krishna Bhandari said the transportation could not be resumed unless the water level receded in the causeway. Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel have been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident.
Mother, daughter missing in stream
BIRATNAGAR: Phurba Sherpa, 77, and her daughter Pengjambu Sherpa, 39, have gone missing in the flooded stream at Batase in Solukhumbu district on Sunday. The victims were swept away while crossing the stream, said police. The security personnel and the locals continued their search for the missing duo, but without success.
Elsewhere in Bhojpur, Gauram Rai, 42, died as he fell from the makeshift bridge into a stream between Nagi and Wakatang on Sunday evening.
Meanwhile, a landslide buried three sheds at Kubhukasthali in Ramechhap district on Monday. Thirteen cattle were killed in the disaster, police said.
Monsoon becomes active again
A fresh active monsoon system has brought moderate to heavy rains in many places across the country, particularly in the central and eastern regions since Sunday evening, which according to Met officials is expected to continue until Tuesday.
The sudden formation of a local pressure system in the country brought back an active monsoon phase as the four-month long rainy season nears its end. The normal onset of the rainy season in Nepal is June 10 and it retreats by September 23.
“The weather will be mostly cloudy in the eastern and central regions and generally cloudy in the western region on Tuesday,” said Bibhuti Pokharel, a meteorologist with the Meteorological Forecasting Division. “The weather will clear up from Tuesday evening in central and eastern regions while the rainfall activity will become active in the Farwest.”
On Monday, Okhaldhunga recorded the highest rainfall measuring at 69.8 millimetres followed by Taplejung (66.4), Kathmandu (56.5), Dhangadhi (35.7), Dadeldhura (35) and Simara (31.6).
