Statute revision, polls in consensus: Nidhi

Speaking at the State Affairs Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, Nidhi claimed that talks with several parties were going on to make sure the constitutional amendment proposal addresses the grievances of a section of the population. “In that spirit, we’ll then plan to hold the local level elections in consensus,” said Nidhi.
Nidhi added that there were high chances of consensus among the political parties on state restructuring if the existing Ilakas (area clusters) were taken into account.
“We have asked the Local Level Restructuring Commission to consider Ilakas as per the spirit of the constitution. Let me make it clear that we have not asked them to convert the Ilakas into village and municipal councils,” Nidhi said. He urged the LLRC to work as per the spirit of its new terms of reference passed by the government on Tuesday.
Nidhi also claimed that talks on the constitution amendment proposal as well as the government’s preparations for election-related legislation were in the final stage.
