The three major parties—Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and ruling CPN-Maoist Centre—had agreed in principle on Monday to determine the number and demarcations of the local bodies on the basis of Ilakas—the existing 927 area clusters.“The agreement of three major parties came in a bid to ensure timely elections because that was the only middle point possible among the parties,” Gurung said. Even though the differences with the Madhesi parties can be resolved easily, “foreign forces” are trying to widen
the rift to prevent elections,
he said.
Gurung said the UML also supported the Ilaka basis just for the face-saving so that they would not be blamed for obstructing timely elections, but the UML-appointed LLRC members have been creating problems instead of completing their work on time.
Gurung has taken the move as a ploy to lead the nation towards political and constitutional vacuum so that they could make Nepal a playground.
Meanwhile, speaking at the inauguration of the first unity national conference of Press Centre Nepal on Thursday, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said all the achievements of the last 70 years of struggle would go down the drain if the government fails to hold elections at all three levels within the next 18 months.
He urged everyone including the media sector to remain united and support for safeguarding the national independence and sovereignty.
