EC asks parties to furnish details for re-registration
The notice follows two rounds of talks with the parties about finding a common view on re-registrationThe Election Commission (EC) has asked all the registered political parties to submit necessary documents for re-registeration process as per the new constitution.
By issuing a notice on Tuesday, the EC told the registered parties that to submit necessary details for a fresh registration by November 15. The notice follows two rounds of talks with the parties about finding a common view on re-registration. The parties are registered at the EC for organisational as well as election purposes.
While provisions under the previous constitutions require a political party to register itself with the EC to contest elections, the new constitution makes it mandatory even for conducting organisational activities. The Article 269 of the constitution stipulates that the political parties register themselves by submitting various details, including their statute and manifesto, flag, logo, stamp, address of the headquarters, names of central committee members, fund of the party and sources of income, provision of election inside the party.
EC Spokesperson Surya Sharma said that as per the new constitution, even the registered political parties should re-register at the EC and they have been told to come up with necessary documents for the purpose.
A total of 164 political parties have been registered at the EC for organisational purposes.
During the recent discussions, the parties had raised concerns over the requirement to re-register themselves as if they were new political parties. But
they have since been convinced that it is a part of implementation of the new constitution.
Senior leader of the ruling CPN (Maoist Centre) Agni Prasad Sapkota said that as the EC has asked all the registered parties to do so, his party does not have any reservation over the EC notice.
The main opposition CPN-UML shares the view. UML Politburo member Prakash Jwala said there had been some confusions over re-registration. “Now, it has all been clear that
the new constitution has
not left any space for non-registration on the pretext that they have already been registered,” he said, adding it is like renewing the registration.
