'Attempts are being made to regain power by provoking people over their religious sentiments'
-Baburam Bhattarai
“Attempts are being made to regain power by provoking people over their religious sentiments,” said Bhattarai in Gorkha. He was referring to ex-king Gyanendra Shah’s statement on Thursday that people would revolt if the political parties continued to ignore the public aspirations for reviving Nepal as a Hindu state.
Bhattarai also lashed out at Nepali Congress General Secretary Shashank Koirala’s recent remarks of holding a referendum to decide whether Nepal should be a secular state.
On the impeachment motion registered against Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority chief Lokman Singh Karki, the former prime minister said some politicians were in the habit of blaming foreign intervention to conceal their own failure to take action against Karki.
Charging Karki with violating democratic norms and the court’s order, Bhattarai said the motion should be passed by a two-thirds majority in Parliament.
He appealed to the parties in Parliament to choose candidates on the basis of their merit rather than favour in order to hold officials at the constitutional bodies accountable to the people rather than to a party or some politicians.
