A dithering Nepali Congress (NC) said on Tuesday that the party would wait for clarifications from Lokman Singh Karki at the Impeachment Recommendation Committee of Parliament before making its official position public.
The largest party in Parliament is yet to come up with a clear position on an impeachment motion against Karki, just as its leaders on Tuesday spoke strongly in Parliament in favour of impeaching the suspended chief of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority.
After the party’s Central Working Committee meeting on Tuesday, senior NC leader Ram Chandra Poudel said
the party would come up with its official position before
the impeachment motion is put to vote.
“There is no need to rush for a decision as impeachment is a long process,” said CWC member Prakash Sharan Mahat. “Our decision will come before we have to vote on the motion.”
According to leaders, the Parliamentary Party (PP) too will take up the matter soon. “The impeachment motion is in the House and lawmakers have to speak on the matter,” said NC leader Gagan Thapa. “Our PP will have to take a decision,” added Thapa who is among a few leaders in the Congress party who have stood in favour of voting for the impeachment motion against Karki.
Speaking at Tuesday’s CWC meeting, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba came down heavily on Karki for making the anti-graft body a terror-mongering organisation.
Deuba is also learnt to have expressed his dissatisfaction at the way the CPN (Maoist Centre) and CPN-UML moved the impeachment motion without taking the largest party in Parliament into confidence.
