Nepal Medical Students Society (NMSS), an umbrella organisation of MBBS students, have warned of shutting academic and hospital services if the government fails to address the demands put forth by TUTH senior orthopedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC who is on the 10th day of his 10th hunger strike.

The NMSS, submitting a memorandum to the incumbent Dean of Institute of Medicine Dr KP Singh on Tuesday, urged him to step down from the post for the betterment of the institute and to establish quality medical education and services for general Nepalis.

Dean Dr Singh accepting the memorandum said that he will not resign from the post.

NMSS Chairman Dr Sagar Pokharel said that the current situation has been created to dole out affiliations to new medical colleges and continue the irregularities in the admission of MBBS students.

NMSS Chairman Dr Pokharel further said that they have held back on strong protest programmes as they are not in favour of shutting down hospital services keeping in view Dr KC's statement for the same. "It has been 10 days since the strike began and no one has paid any heed," he said, "If this goes on for long, sir's (Dr KC's) health will be in danger. They are making us protest by shutting down hospital services."
