Maharjan won the historic medal in the women’s athletic physic (up to 165cm in height) category, informed the National Sports Council in a statement on Sunday. Mongolian competitor Gambaga Ugalsebeg clinched gold and Yelena struck silver in the category.
It is the first time that a Nepali women had won a medal in the international bodybuilding event. Nanita is also only the second Nepali woman to compete at the international arena after Nirmala Maharjan, who participated in the same even last year in Bangkok.
A local of Naya Bazaar in Kirtipur, the 31-year-old has been in the field only for the last three years. Particiapting in her debut national competition in September, Maharjan won gold medal to pave way for Pattaya participation. “I am happy to provide Nepal a medal,” said Nanita. “Since it was my first international event, I was hoping to fare well and thankfully I achieved my goal.”
